GREENER SPACES, RENEWABLE ENERGY
SUSTAINABILITY AT HAMBURG MESSE AND CONGRESS
Introducing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
Hamburg Messe und Congress (HMC) with its two corporate divisions, Trade Fairs and CCH – Congress Center Hamburg, is committed to ensuring responsible and sustainable operations.
We base our commitment on the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to reconcile economic interests with ecological and social causes.
We feel it is our responsibility to follow these principles of sustainable operations in every respect, and we consider doing so as a fundamental element of our corporate culture.
Sustainability built into the venue
When we think about sustainability in the events industry, we often think about recycling, public transport options or reducing waste.
But sometimes sustainability is built directly into the venue itself.
Hamburg Messe und Congress continues to invest in sustainability initiatives across its site.
In spring 2025, installation began on a new photovoltaic system. The 393 kW solar power system on the roof of the Congress Center Hamburg supports the generation of renewable energy on-site.
Work was also completed on the redesign and replanting of the rooftop garden on Hall H, creating additional green space and supporting biodiversity in the heart of Hamburg. The planted rooftop garden is one of the largest of its kind in Europe.
Beyond its environmental benefits, the space also creates opportunities for outdoor events, offering views across the neighbouring Planten un Blomen gardens alongside a unique setting in the heart of Hamburg.
As sustainability continues to evolve across the events industry, it is interesting to see how venues are integrating environmental considerations into both their infrastructure, and the experience they create for exhibitors and visitors alike.
From renewable energy to rooftop greenery, sustainability is becoming part of the fabric of Hamburg Messe and Congress.
